The more I get into this fitness malarkey the more I get asked how do you find the time and motivation to keep going? Well I’m an all or nothing kinda girl so if I want to do something I go for it and give it all I’ve got. I’m not sure how after 30 and a bit years fitness has gripped me but I think I’m officially past the faddy phase and cant see me quitting any time soon. So what keeps me going when I’m knackered, hungry and lacking motivation? For me I think it boils down to 3 things, I have my external sources (Fitspos), Inner circle (coaches, gym buddies and you guys) and then my own personal pride and competitiveness…
1. Fitspos – these are my fitness inspirations who fill up my Instagram and Facebook feeds. You might be surprised but no, it’s not all food on there (it’s mainly food, but there are also plenty of people of inspire me on there too). If anyone actually glanced over my shoulder and saw my feed it might look a bit odd with photos of burgers and bronzed bikini clad girls. Haha! But it only takes me a few minutes of scrolling down the Instafeeds of Alexandra Ambrossio, Millie Mackintosh or Paige Hathaway and that’s enough to get my arse skipping down to the gym.
2. An obvious one but just looking in the mirror and seeing things look a little different, less of wobble and my clothes generally fitting better really helps. Seeing progress however small lets you know that you’re chipping away and it’s worth it. It still feels strange having some muscle – I haven’t got bulky by any means but I actually have some strength and definition for the first time ever. It’s also a great feeling when you can lift something that you would have previously found really heavy (and that’s when my competitive streak come out and spurs me on more).
3. Surrounding yourself with the right people really helps! I’ve enrolled with a gym that’s a little different to your average high street chain. I’d say it’s a hybrid between hiring a personal trainer, boot camp and going to group classes. If I sacked off too many sessions and played the I’m too ‘busy’ or ‘tired’ card I know for a fact that wouldn’t cut it with the coaches. Not only would missing sessions be good money down the drain but I’d also feel like a bit of a flake. The team spirit of the classes keeps me going and also you lot messaging me, commenting on posts and asking me questions inspires me to keep plugging away and not be a quitter! Those comments and hearing how you’ve all started on your own fitness journeys keeps me accountable and spurs me on to try a little harder, lift a little heavier, and keep going a bit longer.
Finally I’m a girl who likes her food so if sweating it out for a few hours a week means I can eat more of the food I love that’s motivation right there.
Where do you get your motivation from and who are your #Fitspos?
