Last week I discovered a new health food brand called Blend Bros who have created a range of savoury sauces to help bridge the gap between the gym and the kitchen. They sent me some sachets to try so on Monday night I made a tasty curry with their Thai Jungle curry sauce, prawns, stir fry vegetables and basmati rice (I had run out of brown rice or quinoa). It was a really easy way to pack in flavour without the calories or buying loads of ingredients (there are only 197 calories per 55g scoop). It was a mild creamy flavour and it smelled amazing when I added it to the pan. I’ll be trying the other flavours over the next week so keep a look out on my Instagram feed.
I’ve only recently realised how important protein is. I vaguely remembered from studying Biology at school that protein is made up of amino acids and that we all need it as part of a healthy balanced diet. Amino acids are essentially the building blocks of all body tissue such as skin, hair and nails, muscles, DNA, hormones, the enzymes that help our body function and the antibodies that make up our immune system. Most people should get enough protein from their everyday diets but if you don’t eat enough meat, fish or pulses, are training/working out hard, trying to build muscle or are injured you may benefit from increasing your protein intake. So, what’s pea protein? There are lots of different protein supplements available but pea protein is a natural vegetable based product which provides a high protein content through a balance of amino acids.
Blend Bros have designed their sauces specifically with health and taste in mind. I often find that readymade sauces can contain high levels of salt, sugar, additives and have a synthetic after taste, but Blend Bros have combined herbs, spices and pea protein (which you can’t actually taste but it helps to give a nice thick consistency) leaving out all the nasties. The dry mix sauces contain 20 grams of pure pea protein in each serving, making them a fantastic way to increase your protein intake without any drastic changes to your diet. They’re vegetarian friendly, so are a great way of adding flavour and extra protein to meat free dishes. They’re also perfect for gym goers, particularly if you have a weights based fitness routine and are a great alterative to protein shakes.
The directions to make the sauces are really easy!
Just mix the powder with boiling water and either microwave or add it into your cooking.
The powder blends with no lumps or graininess and you can either leave it to thicken or dilute with more water depending on your preference.
They currently have 5 great flavours in their debut range:
Thai Jungle Curry, a mild fragrant curry sauce with coconut, lemongrass, ginger, cumin and garlic. Mix this with chicken, baby sweet corn, mushrooms and spinach for quick easy Thai curry and serve with Jasmine or brown rice.
Mexican Pibil Stew a blend of Mexican flavours including orange, cumin and paprika. They suggest making pulled pork Pibil style with toasted quinoa, jalepano salsa, toasted wraps and Pibil sauce. Mmm!
Spanish Tomato and Chorizo, a rich tomato sauce with bell pepper and smoked paprika. It would be perfect to add into pasta bakes, Spaghetti Bolognese or a chilli con carne.
Sicilian lemon with Sicilian lemons, garlic and oregano. Serve this with roast chicken, ratatouille and brown pasta.
Indian Keralan Curry – use this mix to make a flavour packed curry with low fat yoghurt, chicken, some chunky vegetables and brown rice.
I really fancy trying the Sicilian lemon and Keralan curry as they sound amazing!
They also have lots more products and flavours in the pipeline, so watch this space…
